50th anniversary of the death of Charlotte Bühler

The psychologist Charlotte Bühler died on 3 February 1974.

She completed her doctorate at the University of Munich in 1918 and qualified as a professor at the Technical University of Dresden in 1920. After her husband Karl Bühler was appointed professor at the University of Vienna, Charlotte Bühler worked there as a private lecturer from 1923 and as an associate professor of psychology from 1927. She was only the third woman to be authorised to teach at the University of Vienna. She worked together with her husband at the newly founded Psychological Institute of the City of Vienna. Her scientific work mainly focussed on the field of child and adolescent psychology. In 1938, Charlotte and Karl Bühler were expelled by the National Socialists and forced to emigrate.

The couple was honoured in 1998 by the naming of one of the “Gates of Remembrance” on the Campus of the University of Vienna. In 2016, a memorial to Charlotte Bühler was unveiled in the Arkadenhof.
