Honors of the University of Vienna

The University of Vienna honors persons who have made outstanding contributions to university and science within festive events. The different forms of honor are fixed in the statutes of the University of Vienna.

Academic honors in the 20th and 21st centuries

In the 20th and 21st century, the university awarded or awards the following honorary titles:

  • Honorary Doctorate (since 1858)

  • Badge of Honor (since 1921)

  • Medal of Honor (1921-1975)

  • Honorary Senate (since 1941)

  • Honorary Citizenship (since 1944)

  • Honor Membership (1945-1955)

  • Renewal of academic degrees on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the awarding ceremony

  • Award of the addition "University -..."
