Christmas at the University of Vienna

As one of the high festivals of the Catholic Church, Christmas has of course also been celebrated at the University since the Middle Ages. The annual routine of university members was – and to some extent still is today – structured by church holidays and festive seasons, just like society as a whole. However, there are only fragmentary references in the sources to the customs, rituals and traditions that were practiced at the University of Vienna and by university members at Christmas time over the centuries.
