The Auditorium Maximum, opened on December 14, 1936, is the largest lecture hall in the main building of the University of Vienna.
During the inter-war period, the increasing number of students and lectures to a large audience increased the need for a suitable sized auditorium. When the Austro-Fascist regime introduced ideological lectures for all students, the long sought after establishment of the large auditorium for 1,020 students was realised by roofing an inner courtyard.
Linda Erker discusses the development of the Audimax in the context of the ideological restructuring of the universities from 1933 to 1938 in her new book „Die Universität Wien im Austrofaschismus“ (The University of Vienna in Austrofascism). The publication was published as Volume 29 of the series “Schriften des Archivs der Universität Wien”.
