On 20 May 1944 zoologist Hans Leo Przibram died in the concentration camp Theresienstadt.
Przibram taught from 1904 experimental zoology at the University of Vienna. At the same time he was co-founder of the “Biologische Versuchsanstalt” – a biological research institute, which in 1914 became part of the Academy of Sciences.
He was persecuted under National Socialism for racist reasons and expelled from the University of Vienna. After 35 years as an honorary director of the zoological department of the “Biologische Versuchsanstalt”, he was banned from it in 1938. His private library and his assets were confiscated.
Together with his wife, Hans Przibram was able to flee to Amsterdam in 1939. In 1943 they were deported to Theresienstadt, where he died a year later at the age of almost 70 years.
