600th birthday of Georg Aunpekh von Peuerbach

The famous astronomer and mathematician Georg Aunpekh von Peuerbach, one of the representatives of the "First Viennese Mathematical-Astronomical School", was born on 30 May 1423.

Aunpekh was enrolled at the University of Vienna in 1446, where he obtained the degree of Magister artium at the faculty of arts in 1453 and lectured on antique humanistic literature from 1457.

Peuerbach was mainly concerned with the works of ancient astronomers, whom he translated, commented on and critically explained. His translation of Claudius Ptolemy's Almagest was completed after Peuerbach's early death by his student and friend Johannes Regiomontanus. Regiomontanus also oversaw the printing of Peuerbach's main work Theoricae Novae Planetarum, which became a standard work of astronomical research. In addition, Peuerbach made astronomical instruments and recognised the usefulness of sine and angular function calculations for surveying and astronomy.
