50th anniversary of 1968

The year 1968 marked a worldwide peak of the rebellion against antiquated social structures - also at the universities. It was carried by a young post-war generation and especially by students. In Austria, the protests were comparatively calm. At the University of Vienna occupations of lecture halls and teach-ins were organized and students demanded more participation and democratization. On 7 June 1968, the action artists Günter Brus, Otto Mühl, Peter Weibel, Oswald Wiener held the action "Art and Revolution" at the University of Vienna. They shocked viewers and the press with the radical use of nudity, excrements, vomiting, masturbation, violence and self-mutilation in connection with the use of state symbols.
