The transformation of the Old General Hospital into the Campus of the University of Vienna was the largest university construction project in the 20th century. In 1988 the city of Vienna donated the inner-city hospital area of the university to establish a campus for the humanities and cultural studies, which was finally opened on 16 October 1998 by rector Wolfgang Greisenegger and Mayor Michael Häupl. In the Memorial year 2018, the University of Vienna celebrates "20 years of University of Vienna Campus".
