The university "Aula", where a guardhouse of the Academic Legion was located, became the most important political center in Vienna in 1848 for a few weeks. In the course of the May Revolution, the legionnaires took the initiative to determine with the "storm petition" of May 15 and the expulsion of the military from the city center and the construction of barricades (May 26), along with radical parts of the National Guard and workers from the suburbs, the course of events. The May Days between "Sturmpetition" and "Barrikadentag" were the last highlight of the student opposition leadership.
