150th birthday of Josef Hupka

The lawyer Josef Hupka was born in Vienna on February 22, 1875.

Hupka studied law at the University of Vienna and qualified as a professor of Roman law and commercial law. He was a full professor from 1915 and also served as Dean of the Faculty of Law and Political Science at the University of Vienna in 1926/27. As a lawyer, he publicly campaigned against the growing anti-Semitism at the University of Vienna during the interwar period.

Josef Hupka was expelled from the University of Vienna in 1938 due to his Jewish origins. Dismissed from his post without a pension, he was murdered in Theresienstadt after fleeing in vain.
