150th birthday of Josef Bohatec

The philosopher and theologian Josef Bohatec was born on 26 January 1876 in Kochow, Moravia.

After studying philosophy and theology and completing his habilitation in Bonn, Bohatec became professor of Reformed dogmatics and symbolism at the Protestant Theological Faculty in Vienna in 1913, which did not become part of the University of Vienna until 1922. In 1916, he was appointed full professor of canon law and philosophy of religion.

At the end of his teaching career, the University of Vienna awarded him an honorary doctorate in 1951. In 1982, his name was added to the honorary plaque of the (Catholic) Faculty of Theology, making him the first Protestant theologian to be honoured there.
