150th anniversary of Johann Oppolzerʼs death

On April 16, 1871, the famous pathologist Johann von Oppolzer died in Vienna.

From 1841 Oppolzer was professor at the medical clinic in Prague, 1848 in Leipzig, and 1850 in Vienna, where he took over the management of the newly founded II Medical University Clinic in the General Hospital. He was primarily a practitioner and placed therapy in the foreground in the sense of physiological medicine, in contrast to the “therapeutic nihilism” prevailing at the time of the “Second Viennese Medical School”. In 1861/62 he was rector of the University of Vienna.

In 1890 a double monument was unveiled in honor of him and his son Theodor von Oppolzer in the Arkadenhof of the University of Vienna.
