The famous art nouveau painter Gustav Klimt died on February 6, 1918 in Vienna.
Together with Franz Matsch, Klimt was entrusted by the University of Vienna in 1894, to design the ceiling paintings for the large ceremonial hall in the main building of the University of Vienna. With his "Faculty Paintings" - allegories of Philosophy, Medicine and Jurisprudence - Klimt created between 1900 to 1907 paintings that provoked with promiscuity, psycho-sexual symbolism and a new symbolist style. They caused massive public criticism and one of the greatest art scandals of the 20th century that prompted Klimt to withdraw public contracts.
