Since 2022, on behalf of the Senate and the Rectorate, a team of archivists and contemporary historians from the University Archives and the Forum Zeitgeschichte der Universität Wien (Contemporary History of the University of Vienna), with the participation of all 20 faculties and centres, has investigated a total of 1,577 honors awarded by the University of Vienna since its 500th anniversary in 1865. This was accomplished in accordance with the principles of "transparency - commentary - making visible" instead of “symbolic posthumous revocation".
The aim of this endeavour is to investigate all critical aspects, to name them, and make them visible. The biographies of 28 honorees were classified as "problematic", 39 as "worthy of discussion" - all of them have been added to and marked accordingly on this website. This represents the result of a university-wide reappraisal project.
